Growth vs. Value

Chart of the Week for June 22-28, 2001

Investment styles regularly cycle in and out of favor. The Growth versus Value relationship has been quite volatile, especially during the past few years. In March, the spread between the S&P/BARRA Growth Index and the S&P/BARRA Value Index reached 45%, its widest point since inception of these indexes. Since then, there has been a moderate reversal; as of May, the spread equaled 35%. Certainly this provides evidence of the anti-growth sentiment that has been prevalent in the market since March, 2000.
