How to Transfer

Once I Decide, What Do I Do?

Initial Transfer Window
As a PERS Plan 2 member, you have an initial transfer window during which you may choose to transfer to PERS Plan 3 or remain in PERS Plan 2.

State agency and higher education employees
March 1, 2002 - August 31, 2002 (Phase Closed)

Local government employees
September 1, 2002 - May 31, 2003

Any transfers made after the initial transfer period will not have the benefit of the transfer payment or the possibility of the retroactive gain sharing.

If you decide to remain in PERS Plan 2, do nothing.

If you decide to transfer to PERS Plan 3:

  • Complete the Member Information Form (120K PDF) and Beneficiary Designation Form (225K PDF) from the back of your Transfer Decision Booklet or from this Web site.

  • After your employer processes your paperwork and submits the data to DRS, you will receive a Welcome to PERS Plan 3 Letter.

If you transfer to PERS Plan 3 during your initial transfer window, you may be eligible for payments that will not be available if you transfer later on.

If you choose to transfer to PERS Plan 3, your decision is final. You will not be able to transfer back to PERS Plan 2.
